Wonki Min, the former Vice Minister of Science and ICT (MIST), surprised many people in the beginning of the new year. He has been appointed the President of SUNY Korea on January 1, 2020 that many people find it unexpected.

Considering Min’s background, it was clear that he has received enormous ‘love call’ from the leading global companies.

The statement announced by Min from Blue House in 2018 as he was appointed the Vice Minister of MIST shows who he is: administrative expert of ICT knowledge and global expert of external negotiation ability and international sense.

He has been a government official for 31 years at the Minisry of Communication, the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning, and MIST. Min’s professionalism in ICT is second to none. Likewise, in administration, none of the country’s major ICT policies have not gone through his hands.

Min led the major national policies, including IT839 Strategy, 5G Plus(5G+), and Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategy. For the first time in Korea, Min was appointed the Chairman of International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the Chairman of the OECD Digital Economic Policy Committee. He has an outstanding international experience without a doubt.

Min gave a reason why he took the position of university president: It is the same public responsibility to establish a policy for citizens and to educate people by providing excellent educational environment.

Min expressed the vision to cultivate global leaders in Korea through the growth of SUNY Korea using his exceptional experience of public service and international field. It was clear why Min chose SUNY Korea despite the love calls from other domestic prestigious universities.
