SUNY Korea’s Distinguished Professor Honored for Outstanding Contributions to Mechanical Engineering

Professor Seung-Bok Choi, a leading figure in mechanical engineering at SUNY Korea, has been awarded the 2024 Best Paper Award by the prestigious journal Actuators. His acclaimed article, "Applications of Magnetorheological Fluid Actuator to Multi-DOF Systems: State-of-the-Art from 2015 to 2021," was chosen from 382 papers for its originality, significance, and impact through citations and downloads.

Additionally, Professor Choi received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 18th International Conference on Electrorheological Fluids and Magnetorheological Suspensions (ERMR2023), held in Chongqing, China from June 9 to 12, 2023. He has been pioneering research in electrorheological and magnetorheological fluids since 1985 and continues to work on innovative designs and control systems for applications such as controllable automotive suspension systems. At ERMR2023, he delivered a plenary lecture titled, "Design of a New Rotary MR Damper for Suspension System of Purpose-Built Vehicles".

Professor Choi joined SUNY Korea in March 2021 after a distinguished 30-year career at Inha University, where he served as a distinguished fellow professor and dean of the graduate school. His contributions to the field include over 650 SCI journal publications, focusing on smart materials such as magnetorheological and electrorheological fluids, piezoelectric actuators, and shape memory alloys.

In addition to his research, Professor Choi actively contributes to the academic community by serving as an editor for more than 15 international journals, including Smart Materials and Structures, Journal of Intelligent Material Systems and Structures, and Scientific Reports. His excellence in research and academia is further recognized by his fellowships with both the Korean Academy of Science and Technology (KAST) and the National Academy of Engineering of Korea (NAEK).

Professor Choi received his BS degree in Mechanical Engineering from Inha University, and his MS and PhD degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Michigan State University. His ongoing work and recognition underscore his significant impact on mechanical engineering and smart materials, continuing to inspire innovation and excellence in the field.

Moreover, ScholarGPS celebrates Highly Ranked Scholars™ for their exceptional performance in various fields, disciplines, and specialties. Professor Choi's prolific publication record, high-impact work, and outstanding scholarly contributions have positioned him in the top 0.05% of all scholars worldwide. He has achieved 1st rank in Vibration Control and 2nd in Smart Materials.
