We are pleased to announce that another DTS Seminar Series will be held TODAY, June 7th, 2023 @ B203. Dr. Nyle Sky Kauweloa, Director of UH Esports will introduce the creation of a hub for global esports competition.

Who: Nyle sky Kauweloa, PhD. Specialist Faculty Researcher. University of Hawai'i. Director of UH Esports. E-mail: nsk@hawaii.edu / Summary: During the 2021 summer, the University of Hawai'i at Manoa (UHM) Esports program partnered with Activision-Blizzard, one of the largest video games companies in the world, to produce a series of tournaments during COVID-19. The events were an unprecedented partnership between an institution of higher education in North America and an Esports league. Dr. Kauweloa explains the crucial technical role the state of Hawai'i played in making the Overwatch League's session a success, and how UHM students gained unique learning experiences with the video games industy. Bio: Dr. Kauweloa is a member of the 60-university APRU Esports Research Working Group, and serves on the board of Voice of Intercollegiate Esports (VOICE) and the Electronic Gaming Federation (EGF). His academic research focuses on the public policy questions college esports raises in higher education. His research can be found in Global Esports: Transformation of Cultural Perceptions of Competitive Gaming, 2021(Bloomsbury Publishing), and the forthcoming Routledge Esports Handbook(2023-2024).
