SUNY Korea returns to in-person classes
Dear SUNY Korea Students, SUNY Korea’s COVID -19 Taskforce met on Wednesday, March 30, 2022, to review our current status. Following a comprehensive review, the committee has decided to end the two weeks of temporary online classes and return to the original mode of instructions, starting Monday, April 4. Please make the necessary plans to return to in-person classes as before. Furthermore, the committee has decided that larger classes that were being taught online will continue to be online. However, they can have in-person exams. Instructors of those classes will inform you if any exams will be in person and will provide the necessary information to you promptly. These decisions are based on our contingency plan since our reported infection rate is well below 5%. Also, as before these decisions are in full compliance with government regulations. Our main goal is to enhance your educational experience with paramount concern for your health and safety. All of the class management rules and policies remain as before. Please review them here again http://www.sunykorea.ac.kr/sk/announcement As before you are required to report any infections to your instructors immediately with proof of a positive test (RAT or PCR) taken at a medical facility. This is required in order to be excused from in-person classes for seven days of the quarantine period, which begins on the positive test date. During this period your instructors will accommodate you by providing all of the necessary information and resources to you. Managing COVID 19 requires the cooperation of all of the SUNY Korea family. We believe that with precautions that we have in place attending in-person classes will not cause additional risk of infection, yet substantially enhances your educational experience. However, we ask you to follow our regulations and be vigilant both on-campus and off-campus to protect your health and that of your community. With the continued lowering of COVID -19 restrictions by the government, it is particularly important to be cautious during off-campus activities since they are much less regulated. Thank you for your full cooperation and please send any questions or comments to covid19report@sunykorea.ac.kr Regards Hamid Hefazi, Ph.D., Provost and VP for Academic Affairs

How Do You Represent Peru at a World’s Fair?
March 24, 2022 An Exhibition and Experience Design MA alumna was part of a team that won a People’s Choice Award for designing the Peru Pavilion at World Expo 2020. The pavilion exterior is covered with a representation of a colorful fabric featuring striped patterns and icons to emphasize 3,000 years of textile traditions in Peruvian culture. Visitors cross a recreation of the famous Q’eswachaka bridge, made of grass woven into ropes. Every year, the local population remakes the bridge just as the Incas did hundreds of years ago. The Peru Pavilion won out over 190 other entries. Diana Estabridis ’12 worked as an exhibition design specialist on the project. Estabridis, who lives in Lima, is proud that the installation hosted more than 1.4 million visitors. “We cannot compete with developed countries that have three to five times the budget Peru has,” she said. “We cannot compete with the technology that other countries produce. But we can try to send a different message, to reflect and make people wonder about simple things that are very often overlooked.” World expos, or world’s fairs, are large international exhibitions that showcase the achievements of nations. Expo 2020, delayed by COVID-19, opened in fall 2021 and closes at the end of March. The Commission for the Promotion of Peruvian Exports and Tourism (PROMPERÚ) executed the project, in part to attract investors. Estabridis was in charge of analyzing, evaluating, and monitoring the exhibition design process. She worked with the contractors to help them understand the story PROMPERÚ wanted to convey—and help the construction team understand Peruvian culture. Exhibitor magazine, a monthly publication featuring best practices in trade show marketing, organized the award, which expo visitors voted for online. Click here to read the original article

Watch the Documentary About Fashion Calendar Founder Ruth Finley
March 10, 2022 Calendar Girl, the documentary about Ruth Finley, who created the legendary Fashion Calendar in the 1940s and organized the publication for seven decades, is now available via video on demand services such as Apple TV. Finley (1920-2018) donated her papers, which documented the development of the calendar—a schedule and clearinghouse of information about American fashion—to FIT’s Special Collections and College Archives in the Gladys Marcus Library. She received the President’s Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2016. The film was produced and written by Natalie Nudell, adjunct assistant professor, History of Art, who started working on the film in 2015. “This project was a seven-year labor of love,” Nudell told Vogue. New Biomedical Research Network to Be Headquartered at Stony Brook
March 17, 2022 Stony Brook University will lead a new, innovative network of regional biomedical research institutions to accelerate translational research that will impact and advance clinical care for many physical and mental health conditions. Headquartered at Stony Brook University, the Long Island Network for Clinical and Translational Science (LINCATS) will be a collaboration with Brookhaven National Lab (BNL), Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and the Northport VA Medical Center. Central to LINCATS’ establishment is $10 million in federal funding secured by U.S. Senator Charles Schumer and supported by U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, part of Congress’ omnibus funding bill, of which Long Island will receive some $50 million. The overall mission of LINCATS is to accelerate the public health impact of research, especially for underserved communities across Long Island, by offering access to innovative and transformative research programs and educational services. To improve the health of Long Island’s three million-plus population, the bioscience collaborative will engage in work ranging from basic research and clinical trials, to addressing vulnerable populations and disparities, and incorporating innovative research and practices such as the use of bioinformatics, artificial intelligence, telehealth, genotyping, proteomics, and engineering-driven medicine. “I am incredibly grateful to Senator Schumer for securing such crucial funding for the establishment of the Long Island Network for Clinical and Translational Science (LINCATS) at Stony Brook University,” said Stony Brook University President Maurie McInnis. “Through LINCATS, the entire Long Island community and the greater New York region will have access to a comprehensive health research network that is capable of a rapid response to emergent healthcare risks, including a future global pandemic. New York and the nation are fortunate to have such a visionary leader as Senator Schumer, who champions the cutting-edge science research and health innovation that will provide important and much-needed economic boosts to development on Long Island.” Click here to read the original article

Message from the President
March 18, 2022 Dear Our Campus Community, The year 2022 marks the 10th year of SUNY Korea – a moment in which we reflect on our past triumphs and look forward to growing further as a higher education institution. Great minds and forerunners once dreamed of a mere idea of creating a truly international campus where competitive academic programs of world’s renowned universities are offered. By the work of many, the mere dream started to take shape in late 2000 and became the reality we can see and touch through the long-awaited establishment of SUNY Korea in 2012. As the first American university established in Korea, SUNY Korea had to navigate through countless challenges to gain foothold with a single vision in mind – fostering leaders who can rise up to challenges of our time – and now, 10 years later, we begin to bear witness to the fruits of the journey. SUNY Korea’s student body has grown from dozens in 2012 to 1,336 as of Spring 2022, where over 40 countries are represented, across 5 departments from Stony Brook University and 2 departments from Fashion Institute of Technology, and it is set to expand its program offerings with an addition of the Department of Electric and Computer Engineering in Fall 2022. At the moment, over 500 SUNY Korea alumni are located around the globe, each making their own unique impact. SUNY Korea will have a 10-year celebration week on the 3rd week of June 2022 where the SUNY Korea community – students, faculty, administration, and staff – will come together to celebrate it with officials from the State University of New York, Stony Brook University, Fashion Institute of Technology, Korean government offices, and others joining us throughout the week. The week will be decorated with various events including an academic symposium, a fashion show, the Spring 2022 Commencement, and student events. It is such a privilege to find ourselves in this unprecedented moment to honor the past, celebrate our present, and envision our future. Please join us and celebrate the year together. Truly yours, Arthur H. Lee President of SUNY Korea
